Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!
Hello, my name is Jurgita. I am 34 years old. I live in Lithuania with my husband Kestas and our three children. Lithuania is a small country on the Baltic sea coast.

What do you make?
I am a felt artist. I make shawls, brooches, arm warmers and other beautiful things from the wool, silk, linen and a lot of other natural materials. I like to mix fibers together, experiment with the felt and the dying techniques.

How did you get started in your craft?
I have been creating for as long as I can remember. I was playing with beads and buttons, designing clothes to my dolls, sewing, crocheting... It was always something that I was passionate about.

How did you find Etsy?
Etsy system was introduced to me by one of my friends. I was looking for some interesting felting materials in it.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
I am looking for an inspiration in my creation every day. Usually I am finding an inspiriration in the nature, around the city, in people, in a cup of morning coffee…

Tell us about your creative process.
First I look through the window and trying to imagine what this day will bring. I like to make a plan what I need to do and what I want to do. Me and my husband work together, on the first part of the day we are replying to the letters, sending packages and making the sales. The rest of the day belongs to the creation, experimentation and searching for something new.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
These are practical and easy applied items, beautiful photos and especially feelings that we put into our works.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?
Every new creation becomes my favorite, but just until I create another one.

A fun interview with Sarah of Well Criated! I don't know about you, but after reading this interview myself, I started feeling like I really want to meet Sarah! Maybe someday we'll cross paths.

But for now, here's the interview!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!
My name is Sarah! My parents (Robert and Debra) and I, have a small ranch in Olympia, WA. We have over 50 Alpacas, that are all like family. Each one has their own personality and we love them all (even the frisky ones like Gafeetza).

My Mom (Debra) and I run the "Well Criated" Etsy shop together. I do most of the Social Media, Design, and Advertising/Marketing for our shop. My mom and I do all of the felting, photography, and artwork together. My Dad (Robert) does all of our logistical work with herd sales, purchasing, breeding, and genetics research.

We also live with my boyfriend, Andrew, who takes care of all the hard farm work for us, and is currently working on developing an Alpaca game for our (currently under construction, but hopefully up soon) website!

What do you make?
Everything Alpaca!! Our goal is to become a source for Sustainable Art & Wellness products. We've just BARELY begun!

Right now in our shop we're focusing on Fiber Arts, unique Aromatherapy products, and Needle Felting Kits! We also sell Alpaca Yarn, Alpaca coats, and Greeting Cards and art prints (mostly featuring Alpacas)! Oh and I can't forget the "Paca Beans" - chocolate covered candies that look like... well... Alpaca poo. :)

In the near future, we'll be adding TONS more fashion and home decor items out of Alpaca! Plus more "Wellness" items, similar to the Aromatherapy pendants we currently sell. I can't say specifically what though right now - it's a surprise!!

As far as who does what... My mother and I do a lot of the work together! But generally I focus on the more abstract pieces (jewelry for instance), while she focuses on the more structured and realistic designs (such as our Animal Felt Kits).

How did you get started in your craft?
My mom and I have ALWAYS been creating, since I can remember. When I was a little girl we'd draw and paint together, as well as designing doll houses, and decorating my room (which mostly consisted of me stamping my spoiled little foot around, and my sweet mother making me all sorts of lovely things).

We still do painting, drawing, and interior design together - as well as pottery and clay sculpting! I also do beadwork, make jewelry, knit, and crochet. My mother has gotten into stippling, water color, and most recently... weaving!

We didn't get into felting though, until a few years ago. We've had Alpacas for almost 7 years now. But for the first 5-ish years, we'd just been hoarding the fiber and not doing anything with it! A few years ago, we finally started having it processed into yarn, roving, batting, etc. And that's when we discovered felting! We started out with Needle Felting, and now are getting into Wet Felting too!

How did you find Etsy?
I actually stumbled across it one day, completely by accident! My boyfriend (Andrew) started a Pandora Charm Bracelet for me last summer. I was searching for new beads for it, and a bunch of shops from Etsy came up in the search results. I created a user account on the SPOT, and have been absolutely HOOKED ever since!

Right now, I'm in the process of making two new websites for our businesses: Well Criated (the product line) and Alpacas at the Well (our ranch). Well... we needed an online venue in the mean time, so I suggested Etsy! And now our main store is there.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
Oh gosh, there are hundreds - maybe even millions - of things that inspire me! I'd have to say, that both my mom and I are particularly inspired by our Alpacas, the beautiful Washington (and Oregon) scenery, and the ranch lifestyle. With so much beauty around us, we find it difficult to NOT be inspired.... which sometimes works to our disadvantage, believe it or not!

We're on constant inspiration overload! Between the two of us, I'd say we generate at least 2-3 great ideas per day. So we're constantly dropping this and starting that.

When I DO hit a creative slump, all it takes is a trip to the bead store, fabric store, or craft store - a little spending therapy - and I'm RARING to go again! With my mom, it's all about the magazines!

Tell us about your creative process.
This is one of the only aspects, in which my mother and I differ DRASTICALLY. I'm a free-spirited, direction-less, and sporadic creator! I start most projects without ANY plans at all for what the finished product is going to look like. I just start creating... And as the piece forms, I follow it, evolving along with the artwork. For me there is no right or wrong way... only art.

My mother on the other hand... is very specific about her creations. She always knows the precise end result of what she's going to create, well before she begins. When working on a new felt kit, for instance, she starts by printing off PAGES and PAGES of pictures. She studies the angles, textures, posture, habitat, and mannerisms, searching for the subject's essence. Only when she KNOWS that she can fully capture it's essence, will she begin.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
I think what's helped us the most (with our newly budding Etsy shop and the success of our Alpaca ranch for almost 7 years) is our mentality about customer service.

We don't believe it's enough to just slap up some products and send them out when (if) they sell. We believe in providing our customers with an EXPERIENCE, rather than just a product. We want people to come away from a transaction with us and think "WOW, they really know what they're doing"! WOW, I can't believe how nice this is! WOW, that was so nice of them to...!

When your goal in business is to make customers say "WOW", it opens up a whole new ball park. We believe that great photography, excellent customer service, accurate descriptions, and fast shipping are the BARE MINIMUM. We feel that those things customers deserve anyway, and if we want them to LOVE us and become life-long fans, we have to go above and beyond what customers are used to.

We offer free yarn samples, provide discounts for repeat customers, include thank you cards with orders, give surprise gifts to customers who purchase generously, and many MANY other fun things! When you surprise people, they react to you in the most amazing ways!

In a recent transaction for instance (where I was actually the buyer), the shop and I ended up with such a wonderful relationship, that she offered to set aside some fiber every time she dyes a batch, and send me samplers FREE of charge!

NEVER underestimate the impact that thoughtfulness and kindness can have on those you do business with!

Do you have a favorite piece you created?
Oh jeez, that's a tough one. I'd say (for both of us) our favorite would have to be our brand new Owl Felt Kit. He's VERY special, because we took turns working on him, so he's a combination of both of our creative processes.

He was made for the NonTeam Treasury Challenge (we won and wanted to provide an inspiration item that no one has seen before). But... it meant we had to whip him up in a day! So we took shifts at felting. :) And the result was incredible! He's our favorite feltie yet!

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?
We haven't in the past, but we're starting! Our first show is Alpacapalooza in Vancouver, WA.

After that, we plan on attending shows as vendors MUCH more regularly. Many of our products are very sensory-oriented. They're ultra-soft and smell INCREDIBLE, so we feel that having the in-person experience will be wonderful for getting our name out there and building our business.

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Honestly, there is WAYYY too much advice out there, to just leave you with just ONE thing... well except the ULTIMATE piece of advice... and that would be how to get MORE advice! :D

Find an experienced, friendly group of people (such as a Team on Etsy), where you can get UNLIMITED amounts of advice and support! Find a team, get involved, promote yourself AND your teammates at the same time, and they'll get involved with YOU back.

I started my own team actually, because I noticed there weren't any Alpaca teams on Etsy! And even though I'm the "Captain" I ask questions and get help from my teammates CONSTANTLY. Just remember to ALWAYS reciprocate friendliness and promotions, and you will always find people happy to help you and give you advice, advice, advice!

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
Sheesh, I don't know if I can remember the last vacation we took! Hah! Luckily, living on a ranch with 50 gentle wonderful Alpacas, I can take a mini-vacation whenever I want! I just go for a stroll in the back pasture, or hang out and listen to them hum and laugh at the babies playing king of the hill.

When we DO get time to go on a vacation - anywhere along the Washington coast, along the Puget Sound, or up in the San Juans, is ideal! We're a road-trip kind of family. Taking a drive up north, and seeing what little fun town we end up in, is the best!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
Gosh, I think I've already told you all of our fun facts!! So... I'll leave you with a funny story. :) It's better from my mom's point of view though, so I'll let her tell it!

"My daughter (Sarah) and I were out scooping poop together. Sarah was about... 16 at the time.

I was raking away, pretty absorbed in the task at hand. Then out of the blue Sarah bent down in front of a pile of 'paca poo. I looked over. She grinned at me and held out her hand. In it were little brown beans... I was mortified! I told her to put it down immediately. I couldn't believe she picked those up!

And then... She put them in her mouth! And... ate them.

I was SO disgusted, but she just kept laughing and laughing at me. Once her fit of laughter was over, she finally showed me that they were just chocolate covered coffee beans - not poop at all.

And the best part... is that it led us to the idea of selling chocolate covered candies in tin pails, so they look like Alpaca beans! And now YOU can actually find "Paca Beans" in our Etsy shop, to gross out your friends and family too! Haha!"

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!
I've been married for 14 years and have a step-daughter who's married. She just had a baby last July and now I'm a 39 year old Grandma of a bouncing baby boy. I was a professional actress/singer for over 20 years and now I'm in the handmade industry. What do you make?
Fine Art Fiber Wallhangings / Sculptures plus beaded jewelry and bookbinding

How did you get started in your craft?
I started quilting just after I finished an exhausting season of summer stock theatre and wanted something to do with my hands. I bought a quilting magazine that had a pattern for a quilt I like, bought a few fabrics, 1 spool of thread and 1 packs of needles and made the whole thing by hand. After that I was hooked. One thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was a resident artist of Williams Mill Visual Arts Centre in Glen Williams Ontario. (www.williamsmill.com)

How did you find Etsy?
I heard of Etsy through my studio neighbor now opalwing.etsy.com
She always comes in wearing the most funky and original clothing and when I asked her where she shopped she told me about Etsy.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
Everything inspires me but there is one person who really helped along. In my first years at Williams Mill there was an artist by the name of Maggie Rodman who inspired me and taught me more about being an artist than anyone else. I was a newbie and she was an experienced professional. Her art was so wild and organic. Even though our work looks nothing alike, she is there usually in spirit. She unfortunately passed away 2 years ago. I will never stop missing her.

Tell us about your creative process.
Well, it usually starts with me dragging my butt out of bed at 10 or 11am each day (I know!). When I get to my studio it's usually a mess from the day before. After spending what feels like forever finding my work station I either pick up where I left off or start something new. I have many works in progress at any one time and what I choose to work on depends on how much energy I have physically and mentally. If I'm feeling really sharp, I'll tackle some challenging design issues with a major work of art, if not, I stick to simple but more labour intensive pieces.

I never apologize for having mulitple UFO's because I like having options. I do a lot of commissions but tend to procrastinate on them. A bad habit I'm working on. There's a computer next to me and I check in to Etsy several times a day. I try to keep my major computer work for at home but sometimes, like today, the temptation to work online is a strong pull.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
Opening my Etsy shop has probably helped the most for a number of reasons. First, online sales of course. I'm open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and can ship anywhere in the world. Second, my shop is a great tool for getting accepted into juried shows. With one click the jury can see a variety of my work and decide if I'm right for their show. I haven't been turned down yet! Third, it forces me to document and photograph my work. I sometimes forget about the things I've made long after their sold. When I come across the photos it sometimes inspires more pieces.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?
Yes, there are two in fact. My first piece called "Inner Light", an abstract self portrait was the birth what is now my unique and trademark style of fine art fiber collage. The second would have to "Finding Freedom", another along the same theme but was the first creation I made after recovering from a serious illness that tooks month recover from.

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?
I wouldn't say often, but I'm getting out more and more now that I'm doing this full time. I quit my day job in May of 2010 and am determined to survive and support the handmade industry.

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Trust yourself. Follow your instincts. Don't live by someone else's rules or expectations because it won't fit and will likely cause you pain. Work on tackling your fears and dig deep. You already know what to do.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
My parents have a family cottage in the Muskoka's in Ontario. It's a haven for me and I can bring my sewing machine or anything else I want to bring. I always fill up the truck with craft supplies and just a small bag for clothes!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!
I live in the home I grew up in with my furbaby Pearl. She is a rat terrier/jack russell cross who likes her treats a tad too much. Guess she gets that from her human mommy.

What do you make?
I currently make cards, jewelry and dabble with photography.

How did you get started in your craft?
I have made cards for my church family for a good many years. After Mama died, I needed something more to keep me busy. A dear elderly lady at church got me started making bracelets by giving me several kits. Then, a cousin inlaw went on a shopping spree and bought me all kinds of tools and things to branch out with my jewelry. I have always loved playing around with a camera and am known at church for always having my camera ready.

How did you find Etsy?
I really don't remember how I discovered Etsy. I probably did a search for online shops.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
My shop is dedicated to honoring Jesus Christ. I try to let my love for Him show in my work.

Tell us about your creative process.
I have no set schedule as to what I will be working on a given day. I often think of an idea I want to try in the middle of the night.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
Offering a variety of items in different styles and prices seems to draw more people.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?
All of my items are special to me. But, I suppose my favorites pieces are my photos because they show God's Beauty can be found even in small town, Louisiana.

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?
I wouldn't say often because I am disabled and can't do them as often as I would like because of lack of help. I do them when I can and enjoy meeting people at them.

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don't give up!

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
I would love to take an Alaskian or Hawaiian cruise!

It's time for our Monday Interview! This week I'm interviewing I's Ha-Lo Ha-Lo. She makes beautiful handmade clothing.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family

My name is Irene and I am originally from the Philippines. My family moved to the United States when I was thirteen and lived in Brooklyn, New York for 16 years. I met my husband in NYC and after living in Brooklyn, my husband and I moved to Boston. We lived in Boston for 2 years where we had our son Benjamin who is now 8 years old. We left Boston to live in LA for 1 year. We found our solitude here San Diego where my other son Mateo (who is now 4) was born. Here in San Diego is where I started I’s Ha-Lo Ha-Lo in June 2008. Halohalo is a tagalog word for a mixtures of things. I thought this to be an appropriate name for my little business since I create various things. I have been creating/crafting/sewing for a long time. Friends have told me to introduce my talent to the public, but I did not quite know how and never pursued it. Not until I visited a craft show here in San Diego one day and saw vendors who had their children with them. This really inspired me. I thought to myself “ I can do this!” This was the catalyst of where I am right now with my hobby which turned into this little shop I have on Etsy. Creating through designing and sewing have been my outlet from my many roles in life. It's an addiction that I have to continue and can only hope that this journey will last .

What do you make?
Women’s clothing, women’s accessories, baby quilted blankets, totes/handbags.

How did you get started in your craft?
I started doing crafts since I took home economics class in grade school. My mom and my sister sew, so I have always been in a crafty environment. I didn’t really start sewing until about the year 2000. I have done crochet stuff, but not sewing. I got my first sewing machine and serger from my Dad in 2000 as a graduation present (only because I asked for them LOL :) ). I sewed the clothes I wore for my graduation back then. I have retired that sewing machine, but my serger is still with me ( 12 years old ) and serves me well. I took the hobby more seriously when I started I’s Ha-Lo Ha-Lo almost 3 years ago.

How did you find Etsy?
I can’t remember how I found Etsy. I am sure through word of mouth.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
Many things inspire me. Such as, fellow designers/artists, crafters, Moms who crafts, my surroundings, the weather, fabrics, colors, fashion shows, people who critic my work (good opinions or bad opinions), my husband, my sons, people who simply browse and admire my work, etc. All these serve as an inspiration for me to create and challenge myself.

Tell us about your creative process.
Oh god:) Well, first I have to make sure that my kids are fed for breakfast. Take my eldest to school, home school my 4 yr old for preschool. Then I get to start sewing or promoting on the internet. Between their naps, homework, activities outside school, housekeeping, etc. I still get some time in between to create. In any case, I usually start with a drawing on a croquis and add design. I would then start the pattern using “Ruby” my dressform and tissue paper. This dressform is great -- sizes changes from size 6 to size 18 --- amazing! I would adjust what ever is needed on the pattern then place the pattern on the fabric and cut. There’s a lot of trial and error.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
Promoting on Etsy. Being on teams on Etsy.   Participating in fashion shows.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?
Well since I made them I like them all --LOL, but my recent post the Nina top is one of my favorite.  

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?
I do participate in art shows at times.  

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Always create your pieces as if you are the buyer. Think of your standards when you are buying an item and let that be a guide for you when you are creating. Not everyone can be a fan of your work. Take the negative criticism and turn that into your advantage. Just be YOU and this will show on your work.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
I love going back east to NYC. I lived there for 16 years and I do miss the city life. We go back every other year to see our families. I wouldn’t want to live there at this time as we left to get away from the cold/snow and venture to something different.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!
Hi, I am Danelle, the artist behind Aulani Photography. I seem to always be busy although an "outsider" might think I am sitting around doing "nothing" a lot of the time-- this assumption is not true! On my down time, I love reading, PlayStation 3, and Netflix; nothing is better to me than the smell of the outdoors.

What do you make?
I am a photographer so that means I make and sell things featuring my art.

How did you get started in your craft?
I grew a love for photography back in junior high when I got my first "big zoom" point and shoot film camera. This love continued through black and white film classes in both high school and college. Even on my down times my love for photography has always been there.

How did you find Etsy?
I was looking for a hemp jewelry tutorial back in 2006 and stumbled on Etsy by accident (I think someone was selling a tutorial or already made pieces). I spent several months researching before finally opening my first shop. I sat in that shop for a little while but eventually it morphed into my second shop tagsandbuttons.etsy.com. I sadly closed this shop only because putting pin-backs in hundreds of buttons was killing my hands. I now reside at Aulaniphotography.etsy.com.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
As for inspiration? I love looking at other amazing photography; it makes me feel inspired to create but not "copy." When I am actually taking photographs everything I do is in that moment-- my inspiration comes from around me.

Tell us about your creative process.
Right now I do not do any staged photographs, I basically get my camera and go out when I feel like it would be a good day to get shots. After I have spent some time photographing I’ll come home and open all the files. I look through everything and mark my favorites with a 5-star to come back to and then tweak the 5-stars and get them set up for all the possible options (from a button file for button-type jewelry and pieces to each crop for 4x6, 8x10, 11x14 etc). When they are all ready they get placed in a print folder and listed in my shop over time.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
I am still new in my current shop so I do not have much to say here yet. For my older shop I think the best thing is customer service and really going above and beyond even if it takes twice as long you want to leave a good impression.

I do not currently attend very many, I hope that some day that will change slightly and I will get to go to more.

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Research a lot before you actually open a shop and start selling. Do not just open a random account and begin listing your crafts…you’ll only end up having to change or redo everything later.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
I am a mountain junky. I love the smell of redwoods and forests; there is nothing better than walking outside right as the morning is beginning to feel the chill and smell that amazing scent of the world around.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I love wearing black nail polish. It is pretty bold and one of the few bolder things I will do. I do not use black because I am dark though, I use it because I am not the most girly of girls and black goes with everything! This means I don’t have to change my nails very often.

Needle Felted Horse-Wonderful Wednesday Finds

One of the things I have recently added to my collection of favorites is this amazing handmade needle felted horse.
This horse is so gorgeous! The details are so intricate, and after reading about the needle felting process, I'd say this is a really talented work of art!

Teresa makes her needle felted pieces from the wool of her very own Romney Sheep.
The needle felting process involves using a straight needle that has little barbs along it. When this needle is repeatedly pushed through tufts of wool fibers, the barbs will pull the fibers down pressing and locking them together, and matting begins to occur.
This is a very fascinating process that takes hours of work!
This needle felted horse comes from Bear Creek Design, and there are many more handmade needle felted creations there! I love the variety of animals she has in her shop, so cute!

How did you get started in your craft?
I began by taking quilting classes and that is where I learned the skills needed to start creating bags, until now I only thought about.

A former etsian told me.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
I can't pick just one because quite a few women have inspired me with their talents in sewing and creating. One show and magazine that stands out is Quilting Art this really takes me outside the box.

Tell us about your creative process.
I start by talking to my clients to see what is inside their mind and try to pull out as much of what they are looking for by asking lots of questions. I take notes and then I draft up a detailed drawing of the finished product and then I start the creating and manufacturing process.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
I have gone in the direction of having a logo that is on purse labels, business cards and any advertising material. So that my product can be recognized.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?

Tell us about yourself and your family.
Hi, I'm Anna and I am the person behind www.Fabricatebyanna.etsy.com. I am actually only eighteen and am still living at home. I have wonderful parents and three fun sisters.
I blame my mother for getting me hooked into crafting! Unlike some of my sisters who enjoy hand quilting quilts, I prefer simpler projects that I can finish in one to two settings! I once started a twin sized quilt...well to make a long story short, It took me five years and I didn't even quilt it, my mom did!

What do you make?
On my Etsy shop I sell fabric flowers (they are great for wedding accessories), purses, and fabric coasters. I also love to make cards, crochet, and sewn clothing!

How did you get started in your craft?
My Mom! She got me hooked into crafting before I can remember! I recently opened my business, fabricatebyanna, in 2010.

How did you find Etsy?
A friend at my church sold maternity skirts and therapy bags on Etsy. She was my go-to while I was setting up my shop and blog!

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?
Inspiration is in everything. I find inspiration in so many things such as: Going on a walk and enjoy nature; Fingering fabrics at our local fabric store; Looking at shops on Etsy or reading the interviews.

Tell us about your creative process.
My creative process is pretty sporadic! I work whenever I get a chance and always make a large mess where ever I work.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?
I have started a craft blog. (fabricatebyanna.wordpress.com) and I have made alot of treasuries, which I think helps get your name out there.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?
I just made a burlap flower, that I have fallen in love with!

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?
I am currently organizing a craft bazaar at my church!

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don't get discouraged, you have four months on each listings...just be patient. While you are waiting for sales, work on: re-taking Item photos and re-working your banner and Avatar. Also, if you don't have alot of money to invest in "re-listing" items (for more traffic and sales)....list your items periodically, not all on ONE day!

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
Nope, someday I would love to go to New York City and London, but that is not at all in the near future!

More Crocheted Fingerless Gloves? Yep!

I am so excited about my new crocheted fingerless gloves, that I just *had* to show off another pair I just finished today.
So far this is the third pair, and I think I'm in love with these! I made them with bamboo cotton thread size 10, and made ties to go around the wrist with a rose attached.
These make me feel all romantic! The yellow and red go together so well!

They are soooo soft and comfortable, and they aren't too warm at all, so they are perfect for a formal occasion, or a romantic evening with your significant other!

I hope to make lots of these kind of gloves, I really enjoy these.

Can't wait to see how they do at my next craft show. It's always exciting to wonder!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.

My name is Brittany. I'm 21 years old and live in Central Ohio with my awesome husband and lifelong friend Josh. We live in the country, and wouldn't have it any other way! Eventually we would like to have our own small farm and large family. ;-)
I grew up on a farm in Florida. I have 8 siblings, 4 brothers and 4 sisters, and I'm the second oldest. My family is awesome and I love them VERY much. I loved growing up on a farm. When I was about 7 I met my future husband. His family became very good friends with my family, and I've had a crush on him pretty much since then. He taught me how to milk his goat, and then his big jersey cow, Buttercup. I thought he was cool! :-)
I am very blessed to have married my best friend, have such a great family, awesome loving parents, and great loving in-laws.

What do you make?

I make all natural soaps, creams, and other bath products. At the moment my shop carries mostly soaps, but I will be expanding in the next couple of months. I am branching out into a few other all natural product lines, including bath salts, shampoo bars, liquid soap, and organic bath teas.

How did you get started in your craft?

My mom and mother-in-law! :-) When I was young, my future mother-in-law showed my mom how to make all natural soap for our own family's use. Later my mom, with my help, made the soaps to sell at our local farmer's market. I always enjoyed making soaps, and my parents taught me to live a natural and healthy lifestyle, so putting the two together was a natural thing for me. I love it!

How did you find Etsy?

A friend of mine told me about it when she found out I was starting my own business. She thought it would be a good way for me to market my products, and she was right!

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?

My mom inspires me. She is the most beautiful, loving, and strong lady that I know. If I can be half the wife and mother that she is, I'll be doing good! My husband always inspires me to stretch beyond my comfort zone and try new things. I'm also inspired by God's creation. The variety and beauty of all the different herbs and plants astounds me.

Tell us about your creative process

My crafting day? Well, usually it is exactly like any other day. I am always thinking of new scents and things, and once I've decided what to make next, I always make it in the evening after the dinner dishes are washed. My studio is my kitchen. :-)

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?

Actually I think that my facebook page has helped me a lot, and my blog has been good for my business too. I think the best way to grow your business is just to get your name out in any way that you can, and connect with people.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?

I have new favorites all the time! My current favorite is my Country Garden soap. It's beautiful, great for your skin, and smells great!

Sell something that you love. If you aren't doing something that you love you won't ever do that well in my opinion. Other than that, be friendly and try to connect with people, and get your name out there!

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation EVER was the trip my husband and I went on for our first anniversary. We went to Colorado and stayed in a cabin with a breathtaking view of the mountains. We went hiking, explored a famous old mining town, and saw all kinds of beautiful scenery. It was really amazing and I would love to go back.

Sunday Tidbit - Crocheted Lace Gloves.

I am excited about making lace gloves! This is the first pair. I will be making several and taking them to a craft show in April, and possibly be putting them on consignment after that. I'll also be happy to take requests for them, though for now I
won't be putting any pre-made ones up in my Etsy shop.

I am making these crocheted lace gloves with a size 10 thread. These ones are cotton, I am also making some in bamboo thread, which is incredibly soft!
I'll be making lots of awesome styles and patterns, I always love coming up with new looks!

This picture was taken with my iPod Touch by the way (4th generation). I did a tad bit of tweaking in iPhoto, but I think it's pretty impressive for an iPod!

Monday Interview - Rew Elliott

This morning I get to write a fun interview! The shop Rew Elliott, is all about bridal, vintage rhinestone, special event, and birthstone jewelry. Every piece is stunning and creatively handcrafted. I especially like the

What do you make?

Primarily I make vintage rhinestone jewelry. I get a lot of brides that visit my shop either for themselves or looking for pieces for their bridesmaids, so I also do a lot of custom work. I also enjoy using Swarovski crystals and pearls and art glass. I recently launched a line of vintage rhinestone mother's and birthstone jewelry, exclusive to Rew Elliott.

How did you get started in your craft?

I blogged about the origins of my shop last month, rewelliottstyle.blogspot.com/2011/02/rew-behind-rew-elliott.html , but in a nutshell, I started Rew Elliott in honor of my brother, who passed away in 2005. I have been a lifelong crafter and artisan, so this was the perfect way for me to focus that energy.

How did you find Etsy?

I was an Etsy shopper long before I was an Etsy seller!

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?

I love all things old. I love that vintage items have flaws, that two pieces of the same thing may not be exactly identical. I am inspired by the attention to detail, the care, and the craftsmanship of vintage items. I also adore turn of the century style... Edwardian, Art Nouveau...etc. I try to bring a sense of that elegant age to my designs.

Tell us about your creative process.

I have been making jewelry since 2005, but my work has evolved quite a bit from what it was when I started. It took a while for me to find my niche and to come to the realization that I need to make what I love, not what I think others will love!

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?

Stay true to your own personal style. Make what you love. That's the biggest thing I have learned. If you start trying to create without being true to yourself, you won't enjoy it and you won't feel the same pride in your work. Every time I sell something, I feel like I just sold a piece of my own personal jewelry. I love each piece. But I am also so happy that others are appreciating what I make. It's really about being vulnerable in that way. Putting yourself into your work, bits of your heart and soul, and hoping others appreciate that extension of yourself.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?

The swarovski crystal and pearl bracelet that I designed for my sister in law. It is so sentimental to me and I am so happy that it has become a best seller!

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don't give up! It takes a long time to build anything worthwhile. Ask for and listen to the feedback of others, but don't change what makes your work uniquely yours. If you have a quality product, people will begin to take notice. Photos are so important on Etsy. People can't touch and feel your products, so your photos really have to sell it.

St. George Island, FL where my family has a beach house. I was married there too!

Oh, and lets not forget that since I'm gluten free, I made some gluten free cupcakes, and Elise stuffed them with chocolate and caramel for me. MMMMM!

Vintage Books - Wonderful Wednesday Finds

I love books. Who doesn't? I also love music. If you are a fan of either one of those, than this Vintage Music Library set of books is the perfect addition to your bookshelf!

I kinda have a thing for vintage. It's something I developed in recent years. I didn't used to care a whole lot, but lately I've been feeling kind of nostalgic. I've more recently obtained some vintage items, including an old sewing machine cabinet that I
use for a desk, another small vintage desk that I use for decoration, and my mom now has 2 pretty vintage intables in our living room, which belonged to my grandmother previously. I might have to post about those sometime!
Now that I've begun to enter into the world of vintage, I have begun to realize how much I've been missing out on! I love vintage now!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!

Mr. Fabric and I will celebrate 45 years of marriage in the fall. In these days, that is an accomplishment and I am proud of it. Our daughter is also an etsian (KPTography.etsy.com). My sewing machine travels with us on vacation.

What do you make?

Quilted fabric postcards - sold on etsy. Off line - 18" doll clothes

How did you get started in your craft?

I have always been involved with sewing. For years I designed and made whimsical cloth dolls, but arthritis took its toll and now I can't do any hand work. So I needed to find something I could do entirely by machine. Since I send lots of cards for lots of reasons, I decided to try and come up with cards that could be sent through the mail without an envelope...sort of a way to share with not only the recipient, but those who helped the card along its way. I am still experimenting and playing with new techniques.

How did you find Etsy?

A customer at a craft fair took my card. She wrote me a letter and suggested that I try etsy. That was the first I had heard of it. Then a former neighbor (woolybaby.etsy.com) said she had opened a shop. So here I am.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?

Not to sound dorky, but I find life inspiring. It can be an overheard comment, a piece of fabric, a song or a bit of scenery that gets my brain in motion.

Tell us about your creative process.

I am an early riser. I walk 2-3 miles in the morning as soon as it gets light. While I walk, I think about my day. I check my shop and then I spend time in my sewing studio. It may be all day or it may just be a few hours depending on how the creative juices are flowing.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?

I think the thing that has helped my business the most is joining a team. It has helped to bounce ideas off someone else's head. And since my team - Hearts and Hands United- is such a diverse group, I get a wide perspective. The other thing I do is send these cards myself.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?

I did have a favorite piece, but it just sold recently. So I am sure that there will be another favorite piece. The one I am most proud of is the breast cancer pink ribbon card I make. All the profits from the sale of these cards goes directly to the Relay for Life Team I walk with.

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?

When I was younger, I did a lot more shows than I do now. I only do 2-4 a year now. I do enjoy the one on one with the customer, but they are very tiring and hard on the joints.

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?

Believe in yourself. It might take a bit of time for you to hit your target, but do what you love and don't doubt yourself.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

Mr. Fabric and I rent a small house near the coast of Maine every September. It is where I go to recharge my batteries and relax. We can drive there, so my sewing machine goes. I am not a lover of hot weather and the weather is just perfect there.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family-

I live in Dallas, Texas with my husband Juan Pablo and our 3 chihuahua's (which are like our kids :)

What do you make?-

Together with my mother, we create nature inspired paintings and prints.

When and why did you start creating?-

I've always been creative but have only been to express it through interior design. I've always
helped design rooms for my friends and family. It was always something that I was passionate about.
Last year, the corporation I worked for went bankrupt and I was already looking for a career change
so that is how the opportunity for Etsy first started.
My mother had been painting for me and my friends for years and I thought it would be
something we could work on together.
My original inspiration had been in my head for years. I call it our Texas 12 series.
I essentially wanted to create small pieces of art that reflected my favorite areas of Texas.
I love it and have our original sample set on my kitchen wall.

Do you have any inspirations, or someone you find especially inspiring to you?-

Nature. I get really inspired just going out in my garden and looking at leaves and flowers.
I really love pattern and mid century design so that is why I came up with our geometric series.
This is definitely something I would like to expand on in the shop.

Tell us about your creative process.-

I begin by checking emails, convo's,( aka the boring stuff).
If we have any orders to ship, I like to get those done as early in the day as possible.
I usually do some blog surfing for interior design sites and handmade sites.
That usually gets me motivated.
When we are creating a new series, we usually take about a week or so narrowing down specific subjects and color palettes.
My mother does all the painting and I do all the print design.
It ends up working out great for both of us.

What are some things you have done you think helped your business the most?-

Joining a team on Etsy.
I would recommend it to anyone just starting on Etsy.
I still consider us Newbies, but we have learned a lot in the last 3 months.
By joining a team we were able to network and meet wonderful people.
Although I have never met any of them, I look forward to hearing and interacting with them everyday.
They have great advice and are so supportive.
I really think I would have already given up if I didn't have my team members.
I would just be lost.

Do you have a favorite piece you created?-

I am really proud of our LOVE series.
I designed 3 of the 4 prints and since I am new at graphic design, I have to admit I was
proud to see the finished product. My favorite in the series is called Make a Nest Together.
It includes our mockingbirds and it turned out just how I had imagined it.

Do you attend art and craft fairs/shows often?-

Since we just started, we have only attended one craft fair.
It was the Dallas Flea and was a great 1st show.
I wanted to do a show as soon as we could, just so we could see and talk to people about our art.
Overall it was a very positive experience and I look forward to upcoming craft fairs this Spring.

If you where to offer a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?-

Do what you love.
It's pretty hard to create something that you are not passionate about, so if you
don't love it ,don't do it.
If you love it more than likely other people will love it, too.

Favorite vacation spot?-

Rosemary Beach, Florida.
It's where we go for our family vacations and it's absolutely beautiful.
I always feel relaxed and inspired after a trip there.

My Etsy Photos Stolen, and Many Others Too!

UPDATE-
Thanks to everyone who contacted alibaba to protest this seller. The seller was taken down for stealing my photos and many others as well. It took them a long time, but finally they did take them down! Yay!

Photos can be stolen. Yes, it's so unfortunate, but it happened! It's a huge shame that I and
so many other Etsy sellers have to go through this. Working so hard to take good photos and finally getting to the point where you feel like your photos do your items justice, only to discover that they are being stolen is very daunting.

See those photos? Yep, those are mine. Not only did they steal them from my Etsy shop, but they pasted their watermark all over them too. Who has the gaul to watermark something that they stole?! Apparently they do. The design is also mine, but here they are selling them as low as 5 cents a piece.
Those photos where taken in my bedroom with my Nikon D80. The book you see is called The Gift Of Music.

I know I don't need to tell you, but I will anyway. Folks, I make all of my own bookmarks with my own hands, and I create my own designs. I look at a picture of a real flower and my hands start to work the thread. It comes natural to me. There's hardly a day that goes by that I don't spend at least a couple hours crocheting because it is what I love doing.
The last thing I want is for people to think I've been buying all my bookmarks mass produced and reselling them on Etsy.

Unfortunately watermarking is not the answer. If their workers will make those for 5 cents, they'll certainly take the time to remove watermark from photos. Photoshop makes things like that pretty easy.

Another Etsy seller made a great suggestion to me! PaperSupply (great shop by the way) suggested that I make a carved wooden replica of my shop name and drape my bookmarks over it when I take pictures. This is a great suggestion! Now I'm going to be busy for awhile designing something like this that will go with my theme.

I should put a strong emphasis on the fact that I am not the only one they have stolen photos from. Looking at their shop, I recognized photos from several sellers I admire, especially all the baby photos! (notice all the baby photos are of white babies, certainly not chinese). So what can we do about it? Honestly I can't find much to do, except discredit them and bombard them with requests to take those photos down. But even then they make you jump through all kinds of hoops even just to contact them. You can also contact the alibaba website (remember this is a venue like etsy, not every seller there is guilty of fraud) and tell them about this shop.

If you do decide to contact them, good luck! This is actually my second go round with this site, and the first time didn't do me a whole lot of good. I suspect they don't care much, since they really don't have to do anything as they are in another country.

I think the best thing we can do is spread the word and come up with ways to protect our photos.

DIY Bags For Craft Shows

It's time to dust off those old magazines with all those pretty pictures you've been hoarding under your bed! Creativity has just come knocking on your door.

With my first craft show coming up, I knew I
needed bags for my customers. One doesn't hand someone a bookmark and say, "Here. Carry this under your arm".
I looked at many possibilities. Brown paper bags, plain old "Thank You" grocery sacks, etc. Well they would do the trick all right, but for me, they just weren't creative enough. I wanted something snazzy. Something awesome!

That's when I started thinking about the magazines I'd been hoarding. I had lots of craft magazines and Country Women magazines, and many of them I'd had for years. They had beautiful pictures on them, and magazine paper tends to be quite durable. They would make perfect bags for smaller things like gloves, hats, bookmarks, jewelry, etc.

With lots of excitement, I pulled the staples out of the middle of a couple, and pulled out the sewing machine. Before long I had a good pile of them made.
As I had hoped, they worked out amazingly, and where hugely popular with the customers. One customer even said that she was going to leave the gloves she bought from me in the bag for a Christmas gift, because the magazine bag made the perfect wrapping paper!

To make these bags, here's what you will need.

1: Magazines with the staples taken out.
2: Sewing machine. Use either zig zag or straight stitch. If you use a straight stitch, use the longest stitch setting available to prevent the paper from tearing.
3: Thread in whatever color you want for the sewing machine.
4: Scissors.

Instructions:

Use a butter knife to straighten out the ends of the staples in the magazines, and carefully pull them free taking care not to tear the paper.

Separate the pages and fold them in half just like they where before taking out the staples (where the crease is from folding the magazine). Now you will only have to sew 2 sides...one side and the bottom.

I like to fold the tops down for a unique look. See picture.

Using a zigzag stitch or a long straight stitch, start at the top and sew down one side, pivot and sew across the bottom. Make sure you leave about a 1/4 inch seam edge to prevent the stitches from tearing through to the edge.
Snip thread with scissors.

You're done! Now you have beautiful bags to take with you to craft shows.

Etsy Now Has Coupon Codes! - Tutorial

Did you know Etsy now offers the ability to create coupon codes? Yes, that's right! You will now see this when you look at your shopping cart:

If the shop you are buying from is offering a coupon code, you can enter it in the
coupon box and click "apply".

So you may be wondering how, as a seller, you can create coupons? It's easy, go to "Your Etsy", and scroll down. On the sidebar look under "Promote", and click "Coupon Codes".

You will see this blue button:

Go ahead and click it!

Now you will be given instructions to create your own coupon. In the box next to the words "Coupon Code" enter your desired code.
Next enter your discount in the box next to the word "Discount". For instance, if you want it to be 10% off, enter the number 10.
Click "Add Coupon".

Note: You can deactivate it anytime you want by checking the "Inactive" circle.

Here's an example of my coupon:

After you have added the coupon, your coupon page will look like this:

You can delete your coupon by clicking the blue x, but be very careful about this! According to Etsy, once it's gone, it's gone! And you won't be able to use the same code ever again!

Monday Handmade Show Linkup 11/08/2010

Click "Click Here To Enter" and follow the steps to link to a thumbnail from your Etsy shop. In the "Link it to" box enter the URL of the desired product from your shop. Next enter a caption or title up to 20 characters for that product, and hit either "from file" or "from web". Since we're
doing Etsy products, "from web" is ideal since it will pull the photos from your product page on Etsy.

Next, choose your thumbnail picture. A new page will come up that will allow you to crop your picture to the desired thumbnail size. Click Next and you're done!
